RENOVA has conducted long-term monitoring of groundwater at the Fort Devens South Post Impact Area (SPIA) since Fall 2015 in accordance with CERCLA and the National Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan (NCP). The Site, formerly used for Army training missions between 1917 and 1990 and currently used for a variety of small arms training, is monitored annually for groundwater quality parameters to evaluate for the presence of contaminants from the historic training events and determine lateral and vertical extents of impact. RENOVA has collected annual and biannual groundwater samples from eighteen monitoring wells, four well points, and one drinking water well/hydrant as part of each LTM event to satisfy a Record of Decision (ROD) that has been approved for each Area of Concern (AOC).
Groundwater samples were collected by RENOVA using standard EPA Low Stress (Low Flow) Purging and Sampling Procedures, and were analyzed by a Department of Defense (DoD) and MassDEP-certified laboratory for metals, perchlorate, and explosives. RENOVA compiled annual reports for 2015 and 2016 to detail all sampling events and provide recommendations for future sampling locations and analyses.Future annual and biannual sampling by RENOVA is anticipated to continue with further contract modifications. Furthermore, a recent modification has been requested by CENAE to add sampling of perfluoroalkyl substances to the LTM program.
