TRANSFORMER REMOVAL AT CERCLA SITE

RENOVA conducted site activities at the Welsbach & General Gas Mantle CERCLA Site (Welsbach) as part of a contract with CENAE to perform various site closure activities at Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) throughout New York and New Jersey. The Welsbach Site is a former incandescent gas mantle manufacturing facility with residual radioactive contamination from waste materials containing thorium and radium. As part of the long-term cleanup, RENOVA removed and disposed of twelve (12) transformers and one (1) oil switch from a vault located in the basement of the Armstrong Building. RENOVA arranged for access to the vault by removing non-structural concrete block walls while taking care not to disturb radioactive soil underneath the access route.

Prior to removal, all units were sampled for PCB concentrations to determine appropriate disposal requirements. RENOVA drained and containerized the contents of all units for transportation to a licensed disposal facility. Upon removal of all transformers, RENOVA evaluated the concrete vault floor for staining from historic oil leaks or spills. With the transformer removal completed by RENOVA, the Armstrong Building can be prepared for eventual demolition to ready the Site for future unrestricted use.
