BUILDING DEMOLITION AND REMOVAL OF TIMBER BULKHEADS

The National Park Service (NPS) selected RENOVA as the prime contractor to perform bulkhead removal and building demolition at Fort Tilden Beach, part of Gateway National Recreation Area in Queens, New York. In support of NPS’s goal to mitigate safety hazards and provide greater public access in the open beach setting, RENOVA removed approximately one mile of shoreline timber bulkhead to a depth of three feet below ground surface. After completing a lead‐based paint assessment and asbestos abatement throughout five (5) deteriorating structures, each up to 2,500 square feet, RENOVA demolished the buildings within the park property.

All work was completed under several New York State Department of Environmental Conservation permits including Tidal Wetlands, Water Quality Certification (Clean Water Act), Excavation & Fill in Navigable Waters, and Coastal Erosion Management. RENOVA worked closely with NPS biologists and archaeologists to ensure historic features and native species were not affected by the demolition work.Additionally, RENOVA completed all work before the start of the breeding and nesting seasons for the threatened piping plover bird and prior to the start of the tourist season. RENOVA completed the work safely and with zero reportable incidents.
